Swimming Lessons

Next on the list of things to do this summer – swimming lessons! I have one really happy kid right now, who can’t wait to hop on the bus every day. Luckily I have a very understanding daughter who isn’t upset about not doing something her older brother is doing.

Even though she’s only 4, she’s got a heck of a grasp on things.  I don’t know if it’s just because she’s a girl or what, but she understands quite a bit of stuff. Heck I sometimes think she understands more than her older 7yr old brother does!

Yesterday we went down to watch the boy at his first swimming lesson (which he was late for – long story with the bus and miscommunication). We told her ahead of time “We are here to watch only, no swimming”. Much to my surprise, she actually DID sit the entire time without a peep. It was a good 20 mins too, and extremely hot for early afternoon. I was very proud of her!

The boy I was proud of too, who for the most part did a good job of following instructions. I always worry about him in structured situations like this, but can’t deprive him of these things either.

When he starts school this fall, they’ll have him on the “special list”, which is good. What I mean is he’ll be in a normal class with the rest of the kids, but will be pulled out occasionally so they can work one on one with him. He’s very smart and not a bad kid, he just has some pretty big problems following directions.

The good news to having a kid with some behavior problems …. for one, the school is absolutely wonderful. They aren’t ignoring it and just tagging him as a “bad kid”. They are actually working with him to correct the problems. For two, we may have pin pointed the problem down to hearing issues.

He’s always had ear aches, but nothing too serious. Although the ear aches may have been causing hearing problems on a regular basis. Plus we may have found that he’s got a mild case of allergies. I was finally able to take him to a specialist after his swimming lessons yesterday, instead of messing around with the local clinic who really didn’t have a clue about much of anything.

So anyway, for the next two weeks we’ll be making trips to the bus so the boy can enjoy his swimming lessons. I’ve promised a family day at the pool after swimming lessons are over, so this should be interesting. Me in a swimming suit – everyone shield your eyes!

So glad to hear they’re getting things straightened out with him. I know for a fact it’s a huge weight off your shoulders.

I’d have to say from my own experience, it’s not necessarily the girl / boy issue as much as I think it is the age issue. I swear in situations such as you’ve described, my 6 year old boy is so much more mature than my to be 11 next month girl. Yeah, frustrating to say the least!
