Fun with SEO Sales Calls

Oh boy do I love these people. You know the companies that call you to talk about how you can rank better in search engines. They usually start by talking about your meta tag keywords, the most worthless part of your code and useless piece of SEO.

I honestly love these calls. These people have NO idea what they are getting into when they call me. I’m no expert, but I have been very active in SEO for about 4 years now. I’ve made tons of mistakes along the way, and watched as some techniques were squashed by Google, MSN, and Yahoo (the ONLY search engines there are to worry about by the way). I also have a slew of pages ranked very well (my latest success being able to FINALLY rank on the first page for “soy wax candles”).

So usually these guys get backed into a corner and get a good lesson in SEO when talking to me. I couldn’t have had more fun today with the one that called me on my highly niche site for Prairie Soy Candles. (We have a small “sister site” that focuses on a few specific scents for the purpose of pulling in traffic for the big site as well as some sales of it’s own). It ranks high for nearly every page using good SEO practices, including the main page.

Of course he starts out by saying “your meta tags aren’t optimized”. I force down a laugh because I always start with the title and description using my main keyword for the page. Meta keywords I pay little attention to other than repeating a few versions of my main keyword phrase. Google could care less whats in the meta keywords tag. But I was curious as to what he had to say, so I muffled my laugh and said “Oh, please explain!”. LOL.

He goes on to tell me I could be using more keywords. I said “Oh you mean like in the meta tag keywords that the search engines do not pay any attention to? I’ve been doing SEO for 4 years now and the site ranks well”. He stammers a bit, and says “well I mean you could rank for more terms”.

I can’t contain the laugh anymore. I giggle and said “No, the site is fully optimized and it’s a niche site for our main”. At this point he realizes he’s got to bail on this call and fast, because he’s got someone on the line that knows what they are doing. Plus he heard the term “niche” and is in serious panic mode. Backs out quickly by saying “well if it’s working for you then I’ll let you go……… keep us in mind though……..bye”.

I hang up and burst out laughing. These people are such a trip.
