Craft Shows & Kids

This subject has come up more than once. I’ve seen quite a few say “what do you do with your kids during craft shows?”. Some replies say “take them with”, but my opinion is that’s just not a good idea. Especially when they are small and can get in trouble easy. I’ve seen quite a few miss sales because they were tending to their kids.

To make the most of a craft show, it really does take two of us completely free of kids. Since I became single early last fall, it’s been a huge balancing act and I’ve called in just about every favor from everyone I know (and locally that isn’t many). I had to convince my son’s dad to take him just about every weekend one month. Christmas was a nightmare, and we’re about to run into more of the same this summer….maybe.

I’m now lucky enough to have my best friend now living just 3 blocks away from me. Saturday she’ll be babysitting my daughter for me, and this makes things SO much easier. I don’t have to take the kids out of town or have someone sit here all day with them. Sunday we’ll be taking her along with us so I don’t impose on her, but my grandparents will be around for a bit to keep her occupied.

This summer I’ll either have my best friend helping with the shows themselves, or we’ll just be cutting back drastically. See, she is now selling for us as a wholeseller. With internet business increasing as well, we no longer have to attend so many shows (with the price of gas and cost of the table, the profit is becoming smaller all the time).

This year we’ll be selecting only the shows that have made us several hundred and are closer to home . Believe it or not, the highest shows we have are right here in our backyard…the town I live in and the town my mom lives in, despite the fact the population of both are each under 2,000. There’s a few other shows we get hunted for at, so those we’ll have to keep. (Such as the one this weekend - it’s held 5 times a year and we are looked for at all of them).

Although we’ve also been picking up more local customers who call us at all times during the year, so there’s another reason to cut back slightly on craft shows.

Overall, I’d say it’s just a good thing to know lots of people that like you. :P
