Plans for Summer
Summer is finally here! The kids are excited to be able to do all those fun summer time things. We’ve already started to talk about what all we are going to do. I can see already it’s going to take a bit of planning.
Our vacation seems to get shorter every year. I was looking at the calendar last night, and realized we are going to have to go somewhere nearly every week to be able to get it all done.
We’ve eliminated State Fair from the list this year, so that helps (it’s just too costly and the kids got rather bored last year with the free stuff). The plus side to that is, we’ll be going to the local amusement park while the fair is going on. We did it last year and there was NO waiting in line for hardly anything. We’ll be doing that again this year for sure!
Of course no summer vacation would be complete without a few trips to the pool and zoo. We’ll be hitting the zoo at least once. The pool at least once as well, probably depending on when the annual blues festival in the park is (I absolutely love spending the day listening to live blues music every year! Giving a kids a break at the pool in the same park is perfect).
Lucky for us we have a wildlife refuge just outside of town, so we’ll be making several trips there this summer. In fact, the first trip will be today. It’s very close by and very free. *GRIN*. I love free. Ok so they do ask for donations and have a gift shop. But still. The kids love it there. Little do they know they are learning about prairie lands in the learning center. Oh yes, and it’s always fun to see the buffalo.
That’s one of the main places our school does field trips to (at least twice a year the kids go out there). Ever since Chase went a few weeks ago, he’s been telling us we had to go.
Speaking of field trips, Chase also took a trip to the local lake and dam. He called it the “new park” which I thought was cute. I know he’s been there before, but he just doesn’t remember it I guess. Now there’s some cheap swimming, since we only have to pay a few bucks for parking. Of course, I’d much rather be swimming in a pool, but that’s alright. Cheap and keeps the kids entertained, so I’ll deal with it.
The last thing on the list is a trip to a local attraction, call “Trainland USA”. It’s a small building with – yup you guessed it – toy trains. They have a huge set up in glass cases of toy trains and figures. Talk about taking your hobby to the next level! You pay to get in, and walk around inside. Every 15 mins the lights are flipped off, and you get to see some really cool stuff. The miniture drive-in movie plays, and a train robber appears in an old fashion gun fight. There’s so much to see, it’s about impossible to really see it all the first several times you go. It helps you get to do a scavenger hunt of sorts to find all the things they have listed on a paper.
Now that’s not all we’ve got planned for the summer. There’s also our local town celebration this weekend, and of course 4th of July. On the business side of things we’ll be keeping busy with the town celebration this weekend, and farmer’s market every other Thursday for the whole summer (we hope anyway – we’ll see how next week does).
Who needs to go anywhere for a vacation? There’s plenty of stuff to do in our own backyard!
Your fellow WAHM in success,
Kara
