A New Learning Curve

While I’m still doing some ad testing on the recipe site, an idea for a new site hit me and I just had to jump on it. Sorry, it’s a niche site, so I can’t share too many details. But I will say this – it’s a pretty hot market and it’s income will be from affiliate programs.

Since I did the recipe site with Wordpress, I realized that content management scripts are the way to go to make professional looking websites, and great for those you plan to update on a regular basis. Although I had a hell of a time with the WP scripts and getting them “just right”.  Call me a control freak, but it drives me nuts if I can’t make things EXACTLY how I want them.

I started with WP again, this time in search of a magazine-style template since there was only certain sections that would be updated maybe a few times a month. The majority of the site is static and probably won’t change that much. After fighting for a few hours with a few templates, I scraped the whole idea of using WP and went in search of something else. Well, I found it, and it’s name is Joomla.

Now there is one major drawback here, and that’s the huge learning curve in front of me. I know NOTHING about this program or how to edit. Although after doing some playing I’ve come to realize that it has a LOT of editing options you can play with. Still, there’s a few things I want to change (remember I am VERY picky!) and have no idea how, so it’s a bit frustrating. It’s almost as there’s just too many options and I find myself completely lost.

Still, I’m enjoying learning about something new and creating a really cool looking site in the process. I’m glad I went with something completely different from WP, because there’s more I can do and a whole lot more layout options (which is GREAT for various sections and pages on the site!). I do love WP, but it just wasn’t going to work this time around.

Update: I ended up completely scrapping Joomla as well. Was just too much of it I wasn’t liking, and I have to stick with my good ole’ tried and true Wordpress -OR- static sites. Plus with every update I love Wordpress more and more – just too many plug-ins and templates to stray to another platform!

Good luck to you. I am new to Wordpress months ago and I am still at my learning curve. Programming is not an easy task, but very challenging.

Hope to hear more about your experience with Joomla.

Wordpress is probably the best choice if you have time to post at least once in a day. The selection of wordpress template is one of the most important factors in your earning. Try to blend your ads inside your contents. The more you blend, the more CTR you get. These were my two pennies. Best of luck

Both Wordpress and Joomla are worth the learning curves for the benefits they provide. I enjoy using both across several sites. I’ve used Joomla much longer than Wordpress, but enjoy them both. Best wishes to you and here’s to your success! Sylvia

Just keep going, you will hit the point where everything will just fall into place and you will wonder why you struggled.

I’m a big fan of WP but I’ve never tried Joomla. All the reviews I’ve heard of it through an SEO perspective aren’t very good though. So I’d be interested to hear your review.

Well i guess that you just used the one that you are familiar with because it will consume much of your time in learning with it..WP is good in online marketing than using joomla. Yes you can play with it there is many editing option but not good online marketing. I’m familiar with the joomla and I’ve used it in creating a site it is a content management system (we called it CMS)and its purpose is really for website not intended for sort of marketing.

Do you believe that Joomla is safe? I saw that we have to be very careful with free services online, because I lost four blogger.com blogs which were infected by malware while my computer was infected too, and nobody helped me clean them or find out what could be done, and I lost also my free Wordpress blogs without any explanation, and without any answer from Wordpress, besides my messages.

So, now I have a Wordpress blog connected to my domain name, and a second Blogger blog for a few articles with different perspective.

However, if Joomla is safe, I would like to create more blogs using it too. Perhaps their support is much better. It seems to be… according to my opinion, after visiting their site.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Joomla from an SEO perspective if you set it up correctly. You’ll definitely want to use sh404sef. However, that being said it is nowhere near as easy as WordPress to get right on many accounts.

The upside is that the Joomla community seems more helpful overall than the WordPress community, but that could be because the Joomla community has a higher geek:non-geek ratio.

As for a WordPress magazine theme – http://www.studiopress.com offers a really nice one.

I’ve experimented with Joomla earlier this year and I found it to be a bit confusing. Granted, I did not spend an adequate amount of time with it, but I became discouraged with the learning curve.

I recently heard of Joomla also. Before I heard of Joomla I was debating between using WP or blogspot. This post is what eventually made me decide on Joomla: http://www.alltipsandtricks.com/is-a-joomla-template-setup-easier-than-a-wordpress-one/
