Fun with SEO and Google

SEO has been a large part of my marketing for several years. Clear back when it was a whole lot easier to rank and we all had things pretty well figured out. The basics of SEO haven’t changed, but getting ranked better sure has. Sometimes I wonder if Google is personally picking out favorites.

I really shouldn’t complain at all. I have a lot of pages out there floating around on multiple sites. I bet if you added up every single page I’ve created, the number would be somewhere over a thousand. Because I have so many pages up, I always have pages bringing in traffic. Sometimes I loose ground with some while gaining ground with others (case in point, I had a few pages drop slightly on Idea Queen, but my home page of Prairie Soy Candles FINALLY is on the first page for it’s keyword phrase) .

While I know it means hardly anything, I can’t stop looking at PageRank. Really it means less now than it did before, and I shouldn’t even care. Even still I find myself flipping through my site pages wondering why some pages have higher ranks than others. Or even why some pages have dropped in rankings but went up in PR, and vice versa (for example, my big jump for Prairie Soy Candles also took a hit on the PR - go figure!). Then there’s pages that have the dreaded gray bar (which USE to mean the page was banned), or pages with a PR1 or 2 (which USE to mean the site had possibly been penalized).

I’m really trying hard not to pay attention to the PR, but more on building content and more pages. I shouldn’t be trying to “figure out” what Google is doing. Mostly because as soon as I do, it’s going to change again. As long as I’m following basics (content, keyword phrases, and incoming links), it shouldn’t matter what’s changed in the search engines. Plus of course, building new pages is ALWAYS a good idea. ;)
