Toddlers & Computers

Several weeks ago we had a parent/teacher conferences, and I had a meeting for my oldest. He’s in kindergarten now, and the teacher was absolutely floored by how well he reads. The kid was reading whole books by himself at the beginning of the year. What’s more is it interests him. She asked what my secrete was. Easy - the computer.

When Chase only a year old, he was already being exposed to the computer. He’d sit on my lap while we looked for computer games he could play. You know the kind where all they have to do is move the mouse and click. While I helped him at first, it wasn’t long before he could do it all by himself.

As he got older, I got him more computer games to play that focused on the alphabet, numbers, and other toddler games. Not only is he an excellent reader, but he’s an absolute wiz at the computer. He knows more at 7 than half the adult do. My 4 year old daughter isn’t far behind, and knows how to get to her games all by herself as well.

It’s becoming so important for kids to know computers, it’s almost a must to give them daily computer time. If you need some ideas for kids games, take a look at a few different pages on Idea Queen. There’s a list of free online toddler games, and free game sites for kids as well. Both my kids play quite a few of these sites on a regular basis. Just be sure you watch what they are downloading or what site they are seeing!
