From SEO to Short Stories

Some might see my now past profession of SEO as a “waste of time”, since I’ve decided to start completely over with my career choice. I’ve never been one to think anything we do with our time is ever a waste. At some point, we’re glad we did it, even if we don’t think it useful at the time.

Today I thought about how I fought so hard with making my largest site valid with W3C. Codes needed to be tweeked, new website language learned, and page layouts rearranged. When I ran the check on the first page, I had hundreds of errors. I thought I would NEVER get them all fixed, but some how I did. Hours and hours later, it was all fixed. Every page after that was easier, since I was getting the hang of what the validator wanted out of me.
What I realized is I’m now doing the same exact thing with writing. Instead of “validating” my stories though, I’m running them through grammar checks. It’s the same concept really. The only difference is instead of lines of codes I’m working with sentences. Is one harder than the other? Well, I’m not sure. You would think words would be easier because they are in a language we know, but sometimes they can be much more difficult.

Regardless, what I’ve fought with in the past did benefit me in many ways. Not only have I fixed the site so it brings me a residual income while I work on writing, but it’s also set me up to handle tasks like grammar check and making things “work”. I know as I go on my writing will get better, just as my SEO rankings did.

Of course, we can’t forget that my current knowledge of SEO and websites is going to help tremendously should I ever want to create a website as an author. I know how to write for the web (which is different than “book” writing), know quite a bit about marketing online, and can put up a SEO-friendly website in a matter of hours. That puts me at an advantage online for sure.

The point of this post is to never stop learning, and nothing we learn is a waste of time. You never know when tasks you do today will come into play in the future.
