Hosting Rant

Warning – this may turn from a small rant to a huge rant. I’m just sick and tired of certain scripts not playing nice with certain hosts. Over the last few years I’ve gone through several hosts. Just today I was shopping for a new host, and getting more irritated.

I’m sick of seeing “well it works well for regular sites, but not if you want scripts”. Ummm, what? With as much as the internet has changed over the past several years, you would think hosting companies would have done a better job of keeping up. Instead they just keep putting more limits on databases and resources you can use. When you run into problems, it becomes your fault for using the script in the first place. HELLO! The desire to make bigger and better sites is our FAULT?

It just baffles me, really it does. You would think they would want to keep their current customers, instead of seeing “Well I used them for a bit, but had to move my site because it wasn’t working right with my shopping cart”. What’s even worse, these are the same sites that offer cpanel with much of these “bad programs”. So basically they are saying it’s our fault for using a program they offer. Huh? Yeah I don’t get it either.

Anyway, I needed to get this off my chest. I love Zen Cart, I really do, but it’s becoming a serious problem to find a host that works. I’m now switching hosts AGAIN because of a “resource limit problem” with the current host. Of course it’s not a problem that can be fixed with Zen itself, since they are even quicker to point at the host as the source of the problem (and don’t get me started on their “recommended” hosts…..the amount of space most of them offer is a JOKE). Zen isn’t completely innocent here, the program DOES take up a lot of resources. BUT hosts really should be able to run it without problems. Or else I see them sinking very fast to hosts that CAN.
