HitTail – My New Favorite Toy

Funny thing what I stumbled on today. I’m in full on SEO mode, and came across this nifty little tool to use on your website. I could have waited until they came out with an affiliate program for this (I’m sure it will be available in the near future), but I felt the need to mention it even though I’m not trying to make a buck.

The idea behind HitTail is that our sites actually bring in more traffic from all those “off the wall” searches then they do from “high traffic” searches. Not to say we shouldn’t be optimizing our sites for those big keyword phrases, but in the long run it’s all those little 1 a day or week searches that really add up.

What it does is show you what terms are being used to find your site with a nifty script. It then gives you suggestion on smaller keyword phrases you COULD be using on a website or as a blog post to create yet another doorway to your site from the search engines.

I decided to stick Idea Queen in there to see what came up. It’s a higher traffic site that gets several hundred visitors a day, so the results are flooding in right now.  HOLY COW the results have just blown me away.

First off, I got the percentage of “top key words” to “LongTail keywords” (those little keyword phrases that don’t get but maybe 1 search a month, if that). The top keywords is only 16%! Yes you read that right – those “little random terms” have brought in over 80% of my total traffic in the last few hours. WOA!

Second, I went and checked out the “suggestions” tab to find out what exactly they were giving me. Basically what it gives me is keywords I COULD rank better for – if I only used them as a focus. See what it shows me is my site is already “sorta” ranked…..somewhere around the 3rd to 7th page of results. Hmmmm good to know!

Finally I took those “suggested” keywords and kept the ones that looked pretty darn good…..and ones I could do some serious damage with in the for of blog posts. It lets me put it on a “to do” list to save for later. So whenever I want to do a blog post, all I have to do is check out my “to do” list. AH! PERFECT! Do you KNOW how much easier that makes my job? Seriously, I already do this sometimes when I’m keyword searching (more specifically for the candle blog). If it’s a term I know I can’t stick anywhere as a “real” page on the site, I’ll just put it on a list of possible blog post topics.

So I’m completely in love with this new script. They have some pretty nice pricing information (starting at FREE! WOO HOO!), and I can see me using this often. I’m going to be logging in to check stats like I do Adsense. I LOVE IT!

You’ll have to take it for a test drive yourself because it’s really that easy to play with. Check it out!

Yup! Isn’t it too cool? Amber posted a list of Wordpress Plugins at MommysHelperCommunity.com (that’s when I first found out about Hittail and mentioned it to you.) However, the page Amber shared shows a plugin that automatically inserts Hittail to every post and page of your blog. (Remember my blonde moment of being confused, lol)

Anyway, I’d really like to get the plugin here on the blog and take advantage of it here. Uh, as soon as I find a spare moment and can get that page to load for me. Stupid computer anyway! LMAO!

I was really glad to hear your review of it before I dug in any deeper – thanks for being the guinea pig! LOL!

OH! And I almost forgot …
If you want to learn a little more, Mike Levin of Hittail, stopped by MommysHelperCommunity.com to tell us a little more about Hittail plus he even mentioned us in one of his blog posts, WAHM (work at home moms) Discover Hittail

Yeah in other words what she’s trying to say is “When Kara gets around to doing, and she will if I remind her of my situation enough”

    ROFL!
